Who Is
Tim Abeyie?

"I'm Tim Abeyie, a former GB and Ghana international sprinter, now a coach, and someone who's spent over 25 years trying to figure out how to make myself, and now my athletes, faster."

I was born in London, same as my two sisters. Mum's from Windsor and my dad's from Ghana. I grew up on a housing estate in South London, the kind of kid who couldn't sit still, always outside kicking a ball about until mum called me in. That restless energy ended up taking me a lot further than I ever expected.

I spent 15 years competing as a pro athlete, mainly over 200m. For Team GB I competed at the World Indoor Championships and European Championships. Later in my career I switched to representing Ghana, my dad's country, and went on to compete for them at the World Indoor Championships, the All-African Games, two African Championships and the Commonwealth Games. Along the way I picked up a British National Indoor double in the 60m and 200m in 2006. That one meant a lot, because plenty of people told me I was too tall to win the 60m.

I got my 200m personal best down to 20.57, and trained under some brilliant coaches including Linford Christie and Michael Khmel. When I look back at the environments I was in at the peak of my career, that's the knowledge base Speed For Sport is built on, not theory, not textbooks. What actually works at the highest level.

The Coaching Philosophy

Perfect Practice
Makes Perfect.

Coaching wasn't something I picked up after my career, it ran alongside it. Even while I was still competing, I was already working with athletes in schools and doing 1-2-1s. I also coached athletics while living in Germany, which opened my eyes to how differently the sport is approached outside the UK. I trained for a time with an American college coach whose influence still shapes how I work today.

When I stopped competing, I set up my own personal training business and then worked as a strength and conditioning coach for a number of years. But the more athletes I worked with, the clearer it became that the biggest gap for most of them wasn't strength, it was speed. That's what led me to set up Speed for Sport Academy.

My coaching philosophy is simple: teach the basics, and teach them correctly. People say practice makes perfect, I don't quite agree. Perfect practice makes perfect. Once an athlete has the basics in place, the technique follows, the performance follows, and most importantly they stay in the sport longer because they're competing rather than struggling.

I'm currently studying for my master's in Sports Performance Coaching at Stirling University. Even after 25 years in the sport, there's always more to learn, and the athletes I work with deserve a coach who keeps learning.

Why He Built It

I Didn't Get Into Athletics
Until I Was 16.

I started the academy because of my own story. I didn't get into athletics until I was 16, which is actually the age where most kids drop out of sport altogether. I spent my junior years just learning the basics and getting beat. Looking back, I'm certain that if I'd been taught those basics properly from a young age I'd have run faster, but more than that, I'd have had more confidence. Not just in sport, but in school, in communication, in everything.

Coming from a deprived area of South London, nothing like the academy existed for kids like me. So it's no surprise to me that the athletes who come through go on to achieve, and that parents tell me how much more confident their kids have become.

Alongside the academy in Leeds, for young athletes aged 7–16 across all sports, I work 1-2-1 with athletes from a wide range of sports, coach with clubs, and consult with clubs and teams on athlete development. I also offer online coaching for athletes and coaches who can't get to me in person. Athletes I've worked with have gone on to become professional footballers, run big personal bests in athletics, and earn places in football and rugby academies.

When I'm not coaching, I'm with my wife and daughter. And if I'm not with them, I'm probably playing football or on FC on the PlayStation.

In Tim's Words

"Speed For Sport was built on one belief, that athletes and coaches in this country deserve access to the same quality of sprint knowledge that I was exposed to at international level. I spent my career learning from the best environments in British athletics. Speed For Sport is how I pass that on."

Why He Built It

Speed For Sport Is
Tim's Life's Work.

Speed For Sport is not a franchise. It is not a generic coaching brand or a course catalogue built by a business that has never set foot on a track. It is a company built from scratch by one athlete, based on everything he has learned, competing, coaching, and developing athletes over two decades.

The brand spans four divisions. The Academy for sprint performance coaching. The Gym for strength and fitness training. Courses for those looking to qualify as Personal Trainers. Speed For Sport AI, an AI-powered sprint analysis platform launching July 2026. Every division reflects the same values Tim has carried through his career: practical knowledge over theory, real results over promises.

When you train with Speed For Sport, you are working within a system built by someone who has been there. That is something no other coaching brand in Yorkshire can offer.
